Oh! Yes, well, I travel through time and space, visiting planets and galaxies and averting all manner of disasters, and meeting wonderful people, and honestly being pretty sort of marvellous, truth be told.

[Dairine is currently staring at the Doctor like he's the most facinating person on the planet. Don't mind her.]

Interesting. I do a lot of that too.

I'd made a bit of an educated guess at that, considering where we met. [he smiles] However did you get started? I'd think you're a bit young for it, after all ...

You and practically half of the known universe. [Or at least her planet.]

Um, basically I got myself a magical computer and decided to sightsee a bit.

Magic and computers? Hmm, those're two things I don't often hear combined. Yuan's the only one I know who's been familiar with magitech. How does that work, in your case? I find the whole concept infinitely fascinating.

Oh believe me, it's a relatively new concept back home. Only been around for a few years now.

Well, the computer serves as my wizard's manual and works the same way any other manual would, except with a more tech-oriented syntax.

[A beat.] I'm a wizard, by the way.

Hmm, fascinating. Do you have it with you? Here, at Paradisa, I mean. Not this very moment, but ... I would like to see it, someday.

I do. It's back at my lodging. But... well, my manual hasn't taken so well to the world change.

I know what you mean - neither has my TARDIS. ... She's ... a fish, presently.

Tardis? [What is this TARDIS you speak of?]

Ah yes, never met her, did you! She's my ship. I'll have to give you the grand tour once this all shifts back.

Your spaceship? Yes! [She’s never actually been in a proper spaceship before! Can you see her geeky excitement? It's written all over her face.

Um, I mean yes please.

Time and space ship, actually. [he grins. you go ahead and get excited about her if you want, he still does 900 years later, after all]

By that I'm guessing you do more than just the time travel that results from moving light-years away.

Oh, yes, quite a bit more than that. My people, the Time Lords, we created the technology that allows travel through the time vortex. Every TARDIS is linked to it, a device called the Eye of Harmony.

Time Lords? [Dairine hasn’t heard of them. His people... Does he mean a profession, group, organization…?]

Oh! Sort of like a portable time slide, but with technology instead of magic. I see.

Yes, that's the name of our race. "Gallifreyans" apparently wasn't pompous enough for my ancestors.

Yes, exactly. .... That is, I'm sure it will be once you explain what a time slide is. [he smiles]

Gallifreyan? But you're... [Dairine stops herself. She had always thought of him as a human—after all, he had looked like one and even spoke English. It had never occurred to her young, earth-centric mind that he might be a different kind of humanoid. Not entirely surprising considering it had been her first off-planet experience.]

Never mind.

It’s a kind of spell, one that lets things move between different points in time.

Alien, yes. I only look human on the outside. [he smiles]

I've only just started really learning about how magic works during my tenure here in Paradisa ... is yours mana-driven, or through some other force? [he knows the most about mana, after all. his best friend is a grouchy old elf man]

[Dairine smiles a little sheepishly.] Guess I probably should have suspected that.

Energy driven, actually.

Ah, but what fun would it be if you suspected and expected everything? Life'd be rather dull, wouldn't it...?

Oh? What sort of energy?

[Dairine grins.] Of course.

Any kind really. It just depends on the cost of the spell. We're each given a certain amount from an external power source, but beyond that it's up to us to supply the energy.
